Good Morning! Today is Tuesday, February 7th, and here are the stories that caught my eye.
Queen Elizabeth has now officially sat on the throne for 65 years today. A Gun salute in London marked the muted commemoration. The Queen became Britain’s longest serving Monarch in 2015, with a huge celebration. Today’s affair went by almost unnoticed by the Queen and her house.
Angela Merkel’s has slipped into second in the polls against her Junior Partner in her current alliance the Social Democratic Party and their new leader, Martin Schulz . While the Chancellor’s party, the Christian Democratic Union still leads in the polls, the SDP has seen broad gains since Schulz became the party leader. At this time, it seems that the left-leaning party may be in line to taking over for Merkel, who has been in power for a decade. The Anti-Immigrant Party, Alternative for Germany sits on 12% losing three points despite making regional inroads across the country.
China and Mexico have announced plans to invest over 200 million dollars into a Mexican car plant. The move has political implications as the US and Mexico are gearing up for a contentious renegotiation of NAFTA.
Iceland has been rocked by a murder of one of their own, as the country seeks answers. The murder of Birna Brjánsdóttir has shocked the country where years can go between crime in the small country. Two Greenlanders are considered the top suspects with one man still in custody. The article does in depth with the reactions of the community, and I found it to be a very interesting perspective.
And finally, several lost Bob Marley tapes have been restored after being found in a basement for 40 years. The tapes, which contains recordings from several Bob Marley concerts resurfaced in a run-down hotel where Marley and the Wailers stayed during concerts in the mid 1970’s. The tapes do contain some of Marley’s classic songs.
